Buffalo Bills Reach Verbal Agreement to Sign Jabrill Peppers after Patriots Shockingly Released, Pending Medical Check, per Tom Pelissero

Orchard Park, NY – Aug. 30, 2025
The Buffalo Bills entered the final week of roster preparation with a glaring concern in their secondary. Safety depth had been widely discussed as one of the weakest spots on the roster, particularly after an uneven preseason performance left more questions than answers.
Taylor Rapp remains the most stable option at the position, but even he has never been considered among the league’s elite. Meanwhile, former inspirational figure Damar Hamlin has struggled mightily in coverage and run fits this August, while sophomore Cole Bishop continues to battle nagging injuries that limit his availability. Buffalo needed a solution — and fast.
That solution appears to have arrived in stunning fashion. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Bills have reached a verbal agreement with a former Patriots starter, just one day after his shocking release from New England. Pending a routine medical check, he is expected to join Buffalo’s roster as early as next week.
The player in question is veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, a 29-year-old defender with more than 500 career tackles, seven interceptions, six forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries across 85 NFL starts. Peppers started 26 games for New England over the past two seasons and was viewed as a stabilizing presence in their secondary before Friday’s surprise cut.
For the Bills, this is more than just a depth signing. Peppers brings proven versatility as both a strong safety and nickel hybrid, with the ability to contribute in run support and coverage. His arrival gives Buffalo a battle-tested veteran presence next to Rapp and could immediately shift the rotation in the defensive backfield.
The biggest ripple effect may be the future of Damar Hamlin. Once celebrated for his remarkable return to football, Hamlin now faces the reality that Peppers’ signing could push him off the roster within days. League insiders suggest Buffalo may look to move on quickly, keeping Bishop as the developmental third safety while leaning on experience over sentiment.
From a financial standpoint, Peppers still carries $4.32 million guaranteed from his Patriots contract, which lowers Buffalo’s risk in the short term. If he clears his medical, the Bills would add a starter-caliber safety without making a major cap commitment. It’s the type of opportunistic move general manager Brandon Beane has made his trademark.
For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, the addition of Jabrill Peppers could prove decisive. If he can bring stability to the back end, and if the Bills are willing to make the tough call on Hamlin, this roster shake-up may be remembered as one of the most important late-summer decisions of 2025.
